Mind maps are an excellent solution for planning and completing complex projects, especially if the maps are well illustrated and easy to understand. iMindMap allows you to create mind maps with only a few clicks, in a comfortable environment. It places numerous graphical elements at your disposal and it comes with enough customization options, which allow you to make your mind map look however you want. Furthermore, the software allows you to manage, present and share your maps or upload them to YouTube.

You can try iMindMap free of charge, for a limited period of time, without encountering any restricted functions. The setup file is 138 MB, which may take one or two minutes to download, but the installation process is quick and straightforward. The software is available for Windows and Mac OS X, as well as various mobile devices.

At a first glance, the software's user interface may seem intimidating, due to the large number of options which are spread across several tabs, but once you create a new project and start drawing your map, you will find iMindMap to be a straightforward and easy to understand program. When creating a new map, you can decide how the central node should look, by selecting one of many default images or loading your own from a local folder. The central node of your choice will be displayed in a blank editing area, in which you may create any number of nodes and sub-nodes. You can either link nodes to the central one or create floating nodes.

If you hover with the mouse cursor over an existing node, a colored wheel will show up. Each color represents a specific action. For example, you may click the wheel's red center and drag to create a new node, in a location of your choice. Clicking and dragging the blue portion will move existing nodes. Other colors can be clicked to change a node's characteristics and contents, to create linked notes or to create a relation between two nodes.

Besides changing the shape and size of a node's branch, you can also assign various elements to individual nodes. The software allows you to assign images and icons, web links, media files, snippets or DropTasks, if you have an account. The available snippets are predefined node structures, for simulations, problem solving, organizing meetings and more. iMindMap comes with a good number of snippets and it allows you to save your own structures as new snippets.

Mind maps can be displayed in 3D, in the same editing area. You can manually zoom and rotate the camera and when you create a new node, the software will automatically focus the camera on this new item. It is also possible to display mind maps in presentation mode. You can choose from a variety of predefined presentation modes or create your own presentations and decide which nodes should be presented, when and in what order.

Pros

The software allows you to work in a comfortable and unrestricted manner. Mind maps can be created with only a few clicks and you can place your new nodes wherever you want. iMindMap provides you with a huge number of icons, images, snippets and other elements.

Cons

Although iMindMap's features are easy to understand, you may need to experiment with its controls to avoid certain mistakes, like creating a new node when you intend to select one. iMindMap gives you full control to make your mind map look according to your own ideas and thoughts.
